Diabetes Mellitus is diagnosed when there is an abnormally high level of blood sugar. There are Approx 1 million people in Australia that suffer from Diabetes Mellitus.
An added consequence of Diabetes Mellitus is the damage caused to peripheral vessels (extremities) resulting in poor circulation (blood flow). This in tern can lead to Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD), which can manifest itself in sores wounds or ulcers that heal slowly or not at all.
Blood flow is essential for the provision of oxygen and nutrients to all the cells of the body - for both living and healing. The main force of this flow of blood is provided by the heart whilst smooth muscle (tunica media) also plays an important role in that contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle assists in the regulation of blood pressure.
