Clinician FAQs

Can Body flow be used on people with Congestive Cardiac Failure?
These patients must be treated very cautiously and in conjunction with a Prescribing Medical Doctor as changes in doses of positive ionotropes and diuretics may need to be made to prevent the possibility of the patient suffering from an episode of Acute Pulmonary Oedema associated with moving ankle oedema back to the heart and lungs via the Lymphatic system. In this incidence a General Practitioner or Cardiologist needs to be involved.

Do all Oedema’s respond the same?
A: No. The more chronic the oedema the more difficult to treat! Each individual will have a different response to treatment which needs to be monitored by the health care provider.

Where does the Oedema go?
A very complex system of initial Lymphatics, deeper and collecting Lymphatics moves towards high Lymph node territories such as those seen in the inguinal and auxiliary regions. From here the lymph moves deeply towards the sub-clavian veins where it empties via the thoracic duct back into venous circulation. From this point Lymph travels via the heart and lungs to the liver for detoxification and kidneys for removal in the form of urine.

Can people receiving dialysis have Bodyflow treatment.
Yes but the treatment will dramatically affect normal dialysis procedures for this patient so treatment if undertaken needs to be discussed with the patient’s renal physician and monitored very closely. In this incidence the Renal Physician must be involved.

Can burns patients be assisted with Bodyflow?
A: Oedema associated with burns is very common and very difficult to control. As there are massive fluid shifts associated with severe burns this type of treatment would only be initiated by the Physician looking after the burns patient.

Can a patient who has had a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in the past have Bodyflow treatment?
Yes as long as there is no current DVT. If in doubt a Duplex ultrasound will confirm the presence or absence of a DVT.

Can someone on blood thinning medication such as Aspirin receive Bodyflow therapy?
Yes. It is safe to use Bodyflow on people who are on Warfarin for the prevention of complications of Atrial Fibrillation too as long as their International Ratio (INR) levels are within the normal therapeutic range.

Is there smooth muscle in Veins and Lymphatics?
Yes. In veins, the layer of smooth muscle is called the tunica media and although significantly less thick a layer when compared to arteries it is still there.
In Lymphatics the layer of tunica media is even less than veins and not even present in the initial lymphatics but in the deeper and collecting lymphatics the vessels are pulsatile due to the tunica media and the pulsatile effect is innervated from the autonomic nervous system.

By speeding up the healing process are we interfering with the normal bodies process and will this have a detrimental effect?
No the effect of Bodyflow assists the body in its natural healing process which as we age becomes less efficient. This is why young fit healthy people respond so quickly and easily to treatment and why people with more complex medical and health issues take longer to heal and need all the help that Bodyflow can provide.

After removing Oedema which has resulted from a traumatic injury is everything going to function normally?
This is where having a health care provider is essential to monitor your progress as ligaments associated with the injury may have been stretched and will require time and support to heal properly. All traumatic injuries should be treated in conjunction with a health care professional as they can be multi factorial in nature.

Does having a metal implant unlike an electro stimulation implant such as a permanent pace maker or internal defibrillator mean that Low frequency electro stimulation or Body flow treatment can not be undertaken.
For a long time there has been a great deal of confusion about what type of metal implants are affected by what type of applied energy, however because of the low penetration of Bodyflow therapy major joint prostheses or bone screws are not affected. Higher energy forms such as Laser and interferential may affect the metal implant but not Low frequency electro stimulation.
